Norwegian Ridgebacks

This weekend I was in Portland and I went hiking with Skylar and THE WORLD'S MOST WHINY DOG.

I'm not kidding you about this dog. I love her. But OMG.

Homegirl whined for 27 straight hours. She sounded like me when I lived in Palau!

Anyway, we were walking along this one trail, like good and decent people, when suddenly:

Woman: What a beautiful dog! What is she?

Skylar: Thanks! She's a Norwegian Ridgeback.

Woman: Oh how lovely!

We started walking away and I said to Skylar:

Eli: What did you just tell that woman?

Skylar: That she's a Norwegian Ridgeback.

Eli: But she's not a Norwegian Ridgeback.

Skylar: Duh. Norwegian Ridgeback is a dragon from Harry Potter.

And that is why we all like Skylar.

  1. It is amazing to think of how much you used to not like dogs. And I should reread Harry Potter.

  2. I am just really happy to have something to read this morning wherein I never see mention of the debate last night. (And yes, I did my civic duty and watched the debates, and discussed with family and friends, and listened to/read commentary. But what a relief to find none of that here!! Although I have now sullied it with my comment. So, Eli I give you full permission to not publish this comment, if you want to keep this post blessedly free from politics. Just wanted to say thanks!

    1. Why oh why did you have to mention the debates?????

And is it really our civic duty to watch them? Particularly when two candidates are missing because the political machine known as the Democrat and Republican parties have engineered it so they are the only ones represented?

I didn't watch them. In my defense - I don't have cable and my networks come in through a streaming app. Funny enough - all of the channels that the debate was televised on weren't working and I couldn't get the feed. Hulu, however, WAS working and I watched the premier of Grey's Anatomy from last week.

    2. I hear what you are saying and agree wholeheartedly. Whatever happened to the careful censorship of this blog? I do think this will be an election to remember, whatever the outcome is, and when my children have to do that assignment in school where they ask "what were you doing when" at key moments in "history" I want to tell them I was crocheting and "watching the debates." And now, back to the real issue, I did ask him to keep my comment decorously between the two of us. The people demand better censorship Eli!!

  6. Where is this wondrous place with psychedelic carpeting, duck wallpaper, wine, AND peanut M&M's? It's amazing! Also kudos to Skylar for choosing a real dog. Not that we don't love The Pants Man...

  8. She sounded like me when I lived in Palau is the single greatest most amazing single like reference you've ever written. I can't even begin to explain why I love it so much

  9. Hahaha! This is awesome. So awesome, I may have to try this. We have a gorgeous dog of unknown origin. Amazing temperament to boot. Wherever we take him, people stop us to ooh and ahh and ask what breed he is. We always respond that he's a rescued mutt, but it seems so disloyal to refer to him as a mutt. Probably not even PC these days. Norwegian Ridgeback has some real flair.

  10. Next time you're in Portland, let me know. There's a secret hike that has 7 waterfalls in 7 miles. It's one of those local treasures we don't tell the visitors about.
