Cathie's Music Suggestions

And in slightly less controversial news . . .

The other day I was trying to find some new music to listen to. Having been in Palau for a year, and generally aloof before that, I am WAY behind on all things. And I have NO idea who the kids are listening to these days.

NOT the Spice Girls, apparently. Learned that one the hard way last month. When did the kids stop listening to the Spice Girls? One minute they're the biggest thing in the world and then all of the sudden it's December 2013 and my 10-year-old niece is like "spice who?"

And I'm all, "zig a zig ah!"

Most of my family members are pretty hip. They drive cars like young people (meaning NOT hunched forward and going 10 miles per hour below the natural flow of traffic) and they also tend to know what the kids are doing. So I decided to text my sisters and ask them for some music suggestions. They provided helpful responses.

Then I thought, "why not check with Bob and Cathie, too?" Bob never responded, although Cathie later explained that he was helping her with her response.

Bob and Cathie: you need to stop watching MTV.

  2. I have to say Bob and Cathie are very well rounded in their musical tastes. I love how they go from Little Susie Snowflake to P Diddy. Maybe Glee could do a mash up!

  4. It's Michael Buble and he's a pretty hot commodity right now. And he's from Canada, that's why he's awesome. Not that I really listen to him because I'm an 80's music kinda guy, but I won't shut his music off if he's on the radio.

FYI, we Canadians take no responsibility or ownership of the travesty that is ... lord I don't want to even say his name... Justin Bieber....AACK...I'm going to go wash my mouth and hands now for typing that...if I could wash my brain I would too.

  5. There's a pretty awesome local group in Salt Lake called Bloom. Their mission is to increase world awesome and decrease world suck. Not only do they create awesome music, but they also do community service, like feeding the homeless. They also send out emails to people who subscribe to their page to help their listeners get to know the individual group members better and vice verse. They'll tell you stories about how the band was created, updated stories about the band member's personal lives, as well as information about future songs and videos that is not yet released to the public. It's a pretty neat relationship that they create with their listeners (aka Bloomers). I also highly suggest Joshua James. He's also a local artist. His style is somewhat close to Bob Dylan, but with a different singing style, of course. He's also very personable with his fans. Joshua, along with the other members of his group will go out to talk to the audience at the end of their shows. Before he and his group left for their Europe tour, Joshua and his wife made homemade bread and brought honey (courtesy of their own honey bees) for the audience to enjoy during the concert. His group are talented musicians who are genuinely good people.

  9. Eli, I absolutely ADORE your blog!!! When I found the wonderful world that is blogging you instantly became my favorite! And you probably hear that a lot because hello you're internet famous! As for musical suggestions I'd say try some Neon Trees, Trapt, Hedley, The Maine, The Cab, MKTO (PLEASE give Classic a listen at least!), Timeflies, Olly Murs, and the new Spice Girls would probably be Little Mix, or Fifth Harmony if you're interested in some stuff like theirs, for reasons I am sure are completely private! ;P I hope I have helped some because these are some ROCKING artists! PLLLLEEEAAAASE keep up your amazing work, it always is a mood lifter and you legitimately never ever fail to make me laugh!

  10. You should start a band. "Leotrix and the Lawyers" or "The Ringworm" or "Eli and Daniel." Or, if you're into what the kids are calling, "heavy metal," you should call your band, "QoC" or "The Psychedelic Feathers." Or maybe you're more into folk - "Eli and his Dancing Palauans." (Palauani's? Palaunian's?)

Also, I love Passenger. It's music, Eli. Listen to them on YouTube, and then purchase everything they've made on iTunes. Also: Avalanche City, Ed Sheeran. Collective Soul (they've been around for a long time, and with good reason), Fun., Halestorm, Walk Off the Earth, and (I always, always, always love) Tom Petty.

    You're welcome.

I got this album for Christmas. The whole thing is awesome. I can stay on their YouTube channel all day long. Ocelot and The World it Softly Lulls are other favorites. And Mobius Streak.
You were hoping for lots of music recommendations in the comments, right?
