Intruder

On Monday night at about 3:00 AM Skylar suddenly sat up in bed and screamed. It was HORRIFYING.

It obviously woke me up.

"What's wrong?!" I asked him.

"Eli! There's someone . . . in the house." he whispered.

Let me tell you, in case you haven't been in this situation before, this is the worst thing in the world to wake up to.

I honestly thought we were about to die.

"What are you talking about?!" I whispered back to him. "What did you hear?"

"Sliiiiiding" he whispered back. "I heard something sliding across a surface."

Duncan's little sleepy head popped up at this point. This should have been my clue that Skylar was losing his mind, because Duncan is very sensitive to any sound and had someone broken into our house, he would have lost his mind barking over it already.

But before I could process that, Skylar had gotten out of bed and started wandering the house.

"Heloooooo!?" he called. "Who's there!?" He demanded.

At this point I realized that if Skylar was going to be murdered by our intruders, I really didn't want the story to be that he was killed while I stayed in bed, so I got up and followed him on his investigative journey.

We looked behind curtains and under blankets. We peered out of windows and opened closets. Ultimately Skylar declared, "maybe they left."

I looked around. "How considerate of them to lock the door behind them on the way out," I sarcastically commented.

It was upon hearing this that Skylar finally realized he was being a little crazy.

"I'm so tired and stressed," he told me.

And then he climbed back into bed, sighing as he pulled the blankets over his head.

I could almost sense stress tears.

That's what medical school finals look like.

The poor dear, studying mid-yawn, right now. #prayforskyman

  1. Poor Skylar...I'm married to a med student and it does get better! But then I hear it gets worse.... also I just saw your tweet about Neil Patrick Harris and while I don't agree I think you need to see this if you haven't.

Go ahead and just skip to the part where he sings and reveals who he is to the judges. It's the most awkward thing I've ever witnessed. He was so clearly trying to sing for real and they think he was intentionally being bad. It hurts.

  2. A few months ago I was under a lot of stress at work and in the middle of the night woke my husband by screaming and slapping his chest yelling that there was a gigantic spider in our bed. I made him get up, turned on lights, removed all bedsheets and everything. After I realized there was clearly no spider, I told him that at least he knows my first instinct is to protect him and not just run away myself.

    1. This is literally a reoccurring nightmare for me every time I'm stressed.

I'm glad you got up and wandered the house with him, my husband just lets me do the hunting when I'm being crazy.

  4. When I was in grad school (art school) we would go out with the med school students on the weekends. They partied hard and were insane and it really made me reevaluate the medical profession as a whole.

  5. I love that you went after Skylar not to keep him from being murdered, but so that you wouldn't look bad for staying in bed when he was murdered. 🤣🤣 Totally something I would do. I mean, he's basically a goner already after asking who's there, right??
